Obscura Day 2016: Creek to Creek Industrial Greenpoint Walking Tour

When the Dutch began to settle in modern-day Brooklyn’s northernmost neighborhood in the mid-1600s, it was surrounded on three sides by water—the East River to the west, Newtown Creek to the north, and Bushwick Creek to the south. Over the next two centuries, Greenpoint would become a center of shipbuilding and other industry, home to a growing community of Polish and German immigrants.

Looking around the waterways of Greenpoint reveals volumes about the neighborhood’s history, geography, and industrial infrastructure. Join Newtown Creek Alliance historian Mitch Waxman and Greenpoint historian and author Geoff Cobb for a three-hour exploration of the coastline of Greenpoint. Be ready to walk a fair bit, since you’ll be following all three waterways.

Tickets $27.
