The latest essay collection by David Shields is something of a revelation: 70-plus essays, written over the last 35 years, reconceived and recombined to form neither a miscellany nor a memoir but a sustained meditation on otherness. The book is divided into five sections: Men, Women, Athletes, Performers, Alter Egos. Subjects range from sexual desire to information sickness, George W. Bush to Kurt Cobain, women’s eyeglasses to Greek tragedy, Howard Cosell to Bill Murray, the comedy of high school journalism to the agony of first love. “Other People aims to do nothing less than change how people think about the act of reading; in my case, it has already succeeded, beyond all measure,” says Annie Dillard.
David Shields is a New York Times best-selling author of twenty books, including The Thing About Life, Reality Hunger, Black Planet, Remote, and War Is Beautiful. He is the Milliman Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at the University of Washington.
