The Power of Women Minding the Dance

Often, women in dance are seen as muses, rather than genitors.

Even in 21st century America, women who control dance or dance-making wrestle with politics and stereotypes. Compassion can be seen as weakness, for example. What happens if we turn the conversation to women’s inherent strength and the power of compassion and stewardship? What if men and women reversed roles and men saw themselves as the muses? Or more importantly, if both genders could see themselves as muses, creators and everything in between? What would that mean for the future of the dance art, dance institutions, social health and the political fallout the arts are experiencing? Christine Dakin, a world-renowned Martha Graham dancer and teacher who has worked extensively with the Mexican dance community and has just made a film about the experience, talks with Catherine Peila, the head of Dance New Amsterdam which supports dance and culture in Lower Manhattan.
