Purchase Dance Company

On May 20-23 at 7:30pm, Purchase College, “one of the country’s most highly regarded dance conservatories,” according to the New York Times, will present the Purchase Dance Company at New York Live Arts, giving New York City audiences the chance to see some of the nation’s most promising young dancers.

Members of the Purchase Dance Company, students chosen from the highly competitive BFA program, will perform two exciting programs of contemporary and classically based works by acclaimed choreographers and talented new voices.

“We are excited to give our tremendously talented students, especially our graduating seniors, an opportunity to perform works by exceptional choreographers at New York Live Arts,” said Bettijane Sills and Larry Clark, Artistic Directors of Purchase Dance Company and Co-Directors of Dance at Purchase College.

The eclectic program will include works by Aszure Barton, Doug Varone, Merce Cunningham, Shannon Gillen, Sarah Mettin, Kyle Abraham and Bettijane Sills.

The performances on May 20 and 22 will feature contemporary works by Aszure Barton and Doug Varone, who graduated from Purchase in 1978. The program will also showcase an excerpt from a work by legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham; a modern contemporary work by Shannon Gillen, named in a 2013 Brooklyn Magazine article as one of the City’s top 20 artists; and a classically-based Pas de Deux by Bettijane Sills, co-director of the Conservatory of Dance.

On May 21 and 23, the Gillen and Cunningham pieces will be replaced by two modern contemporary works by Purchase alumni. Sarah Mettin, a 2011 grad, is the recipient of an Outstanding Choreographer Award from Youth America Grand Prix and Regional Dance America Festival’s Monticello Award. Kyle Abraham, a 2000 grad, is the recipient of the MacArthur “genius” Award, among other honors.
