Queens Library Presents Jelani Cobb

500x500-jelani-cobbBreaking the Line: A Parable of Race and Education in Queens, NY

Queens Library presents an evening of frank conversation with author/professor Jelani Cobb on the history of migration and civil rights in Queens and how it has played out in one of the most diverse boroughs in the nation. He will trace today’s headline-grabbing racial issues back to the role of a local high school. Please feel welcome to join this stimulating discussion as a stand-alone guest or continue the conversation at the cash bar and/or excellent tables, before or after, at one of LIC’s best venues. (Reservations are suggested.)

Jelani Cobb is a writer and professor with a deep understanding about race, politics, history and culture. Mr. Cobb will talk about the rise and fall of Jamaica High School in Queens, NY, once the largest high school in the United States, which was the focus of his recent article in The New Yorker. Mr. Cobb will discuss and delve into the importance of Jamaica High School and its role in the early black migration into Queens, as well as the struggles over integrated housing in the area and the ways in which the civil rights movement played out in what is now the most diverse area in the United States. Books will be available for purchase and autographing.
