Re: Zoning | 100 Years of Shaping the Future of New York

The Museum and The Municipal Art Society invite you to celebrate the centennial of the Zoning Law. On July 25, 1916, New York City enacted the nation’s first comprehensive zoning code. Intended as an innovative tool to guide urban growth, the law continues to play a central role in shaping our city today. On the centennial anniversary of the first Zoning Resolution, join us for an in-depth examination of the law, with an eye towards the future. We’ll ask how zoning can better serve contemporary objectives and address major physical, economic, and social challenges now facing our city. The event will begin with a historical account of the origins of zoning and major changes enacted since 1916, followed by an overview of the current zoning proposals. Carl Weisbrod, Director of the New York City Department of City Planning and Chairman of the New York City Planning Commission, will deliver virtual remarks and a panel of experts will also discuss the hurdles and potential improvements to zoning for the century to come.
