The Reality About Decommissioning Nuclear Power Plants

NRDCPanel with the Natural Resources Defense Council
Leader Curt Collier presides
Some feel that nuclear power is a cleaner alternative to climate-changing fossil fuels and can be utilized safely.  Others believe that nuclear power poses far greater risks to the environment and must be passed over in favor of greener fuel sources. Regardless of whether you are for or against nuclear power, we all realize we have a problem; America’s nuclear power plants are getting past their prime and there are real challenges facing their decommissioning.
Last October, in a forum sponsored by the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC), Clearwater, and the Ethical Society, it was determined that there were many lingering questions about the storage of nuclear waste, plant and worker safety, gaps in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s oversight, environmental justice issues, the lack of decommissioning trust funds, and the needs of communities as they transition to replacement energy strategies.
The NRDC and Clearwater have taken on these challenges and continue to press for rule-making and comprehensive evaluation of the decommissioning process.  Come as panel experts from the NRDC and Clearwater engage in a frank discussion of what has been done, what needs to be done, and how these unanswered questions effect you and your family.
After the platform, in honor of Earth Week, there will be an opportunity for community engagement in the issues.
