Ritual in Scent, an Illustrated Lecture with Alexis Karl SOLD OUT

Ritual in Scent will be an olfactory and artistic exploration of ritual spanning from Ancient Egyptian and Mayan culture, shamanism, voodoo, magical herbalism and modern witchcraft. Focusing on the oils and incenses extracted from specific resins, woods, spices and florals, we will experience the power of these fragrant elements that guided people throughout history in incantations, lifting the veil between spirits, and casting spells. We will smell the precious, ancient resins of copal, ambergris, frankincense and myrrh along with pure essences of a melange of flowers used in spells and healing, and experience ancient magical potions prepared for the talk.

Alexis Karl is a multimedia artist and perfumer who lectures regularly on the cultural relevance of fragrance at the Metropolitan Museum, teaches “The Art of Perfume” at School of Visual Arts, and has held talks on fragrance and art at the Guggenheim Museum and NYU. Ms. Karl is the perfumer and founder of Scent By Alexis, an artisanal fragrance line based on art and literature, and is a perfumer and co-owner of House of Cherry Bomb fragrance line. In addition to fragrance, Karl is an exhibiting multimedia artist and performer of gothic music. Her dark music projects, Ondyne’s Demise and Anima Animus Animal, are represented by Onyudo Records and employ film, dance, aerial and fire spinning along with scent diffusions in live performances. Karl has exhibited and performed internationally and in the States, most notable performances at the Whitney Biennial, Guggenheim Museum and 17th. Century Trinity Church in Manchester, UK.
