A Scene from the Play “Melissa’s Choice”

posterMelissa’s Choice is a drama about a lawyer who is passionate about women’s rights, the environment, population control and two men. An unintended pregnancy produces increasingly bizarre fantasies that compel her to choose between them. The play is set at a campsite in the Oregon woods where a raunchy cowboy and a forest ranger (a single mother of two) become Melissa’s unlikely guides in discovering who she is and with whom she belongs.

After leaving the practice of medicine, Steven Somkin has written nine full-length and four one-act plays. His plays have been produced Off Broadway and regionally; some have won awards and one has been published. Four of his last five plays, including Melissa’s Choice, address some aspect of environmentalism. For several decades he wrote for the pharmaceutical industry in diverse formats, including film and video, winning more than a dozen industry awards. He is a founder and artistic director of the Golden Squirrel Theater which, with co-producer The Worcester Shakespeare Company, will produce Melissa’s Choice at The Lion on 42nd Street in May.
