Second Tuesday Presents the 25th Anniversary Celebration of “In the Life”

We invite you to join us as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the debut of the multi-award winning and Emmy-nominated series that shined a continuous, positive light on our community before it was in fashion.

The first and longest-running series on American television devoted to LGBT topics, In the Life for two decades served as a primary news and information source for social, political and legal issues facing the community at a time before the mainstream media would do so.

The show openly celebrated LGBT culture and profiled political and religious leaders, activists, advocates, artists, writers, performers, athletes and non-profit organizations that were making a difference in the lives of LGBT people.

Over the course of 20 seasons, the show’s team of behind-the-scenes staff and on-air talent provided ongoing coverage of our legal and ideological battles on the national and state levels for equal rights and protection under the law. The series was broadcast on public television from 1992 to 2012, and the entire archive of In the Life historical material is now held at the UCLA Film & Television Archive, with the complete collection of In the Life episodes streaming from their website.

Former staff and others sharing their reflections on the historic pilot as well as the legacy of the groundbreaking series include: In the Life creator John Scagliotti (director, Before Homosexuals); former In the Life host/producer Katherine Linton (producer, The Evolution Will Be Televised for Logo); pilot episode director Bob Diamond; executive producers Jacqueline Gares (director, Free Cece!) and Charles Ignacio (producer, The Lady in Question is Charles Busch); associate producer Desireena Almoradie (director, To Germany, With Love); director of membership and community relations David P. Martin; director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive, Dr. Jan-Christopher Horak; film director Madeleine Olnek, a member of the first live studio audience; and Maria-Elena Grant, who performed on the pilot episode as a member of the Lavender Light Gospel Choir.
