Selected Shorts: Recommended Reading with Electric Literature

Symphony Space and Electric Literature team up to present innovative and vibrant new fiction from their celebrated literary magazines Recommended Reading and Okey-Panky, giving a glimpse into the future of modern storytelling.

Stockard Channing (The Good Wife), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), Cristin Milioti (The Mindy Project), Brandon J. Dirden (The Americans), Valorie Curry (The Tick), and Jennifer Ikeda (Madam Secretary) perform stories by authors Etgar Keret, Viet Thanh Nguyen (2016 Pulitzer Prize for The Sympathizer), Phil Klay, Helen Phillips, Anthony Tognazzini, and Nancy Jooyoun Kim.

The evening will be hosted by Halimah Marcus (Executive Director of Electric Literature, Editor-in-Chief, Recommended Reading). Special guests include Akhil Sharma (Family Life) introducing a story by Viet Thanh Nguyen and Phil Klay (Redeployment) introducing his own work.

Electric Literature‘s mission is to expand the influence of literature in popular culture by fostering lively and innovative literary conversations and making exceptional writing accessible to new audiences. Through their website, social media, events, and other special programming and projects, they reach an international audience with free, online content, while paying every single one of their contributing writers.

In addition to the essays, criticism, and literary scuttlebutt on electricliterature.com, you’ll find their acclaimed weekly fiction series, Recommended Reading, which published its 250th issue in March 2017. Their second weekly magazine, Okey-Panky, has provided a home for brief, strange writings and comics since January 2015.

Selected Shorts is produced by Symphony Space and broadcast on more than 150 stations around the country. The Selected Shorts podcast consistently ranks as one of the most popular podcasts on iTunes. The series began in 1985 and enjoys sold-out performances to this day. Selected Shorts was conceived with a simple premise: take great stories by well-known and emerging writers and have them performed by terrific actors of stage and screen. Featuring stories around a lively theme, the favorite works of a guest author, or a special collaboration, each Selected Shorts event is a unique night of literature in performance.

Premium tickets are available and include a $50 tax-deductible donation to Symphony Space.
