Silent Film Matinee: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari/Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920)

This classic and early prototype of the horror film begins as a series of murders occur in a small town and clues seem to lead to Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss), a sinister mesmerist, and his hypnotized somnambulant assistant, Cesare (Conrad Veidt), who may be carrying out those crimes. This movie’s German-Expressionist visual and performance styles mark this as an art film, but the nightmare world it envisions signals a deeper crisis beneath its surface. Directed by Robert Wiene.
