Special Film Screening: Martha Edelheit’s Hats, Bottles, and Bones

Please join us for a special screening of Martha Edelheit’s 1977 film, Hats, Bottles, and Bones: A Portrait of Sari Dienes. (Length: 22 minutes.) Ms. Edelheit will be on hand to introduce the film, and available for questions afterward. Refreshments and light snacks will be served.

Created specifically as a portrait—as opposed to a biography or documentary—Edelheit’s multi-layered work compellingly captures Dienes’ unique personality, complex life style, and diverse creative range through the use of a variety of inventive cinematic techniques. In his review at its release, Daryl Chin noted “Dienes’ wit, humor and resilience serves as an appropriate example to women artists in any field; her boundless invention as manifested in her collages and assemblages and constructions is a heartening index.” Hats, Bottles, and Bones has been featured in numerous experimental film festivals, and presented at the Anthology Film Archives, the New York Public Library and the Museum of Modern Art.

Martha Edelheit has been a practicing artist and filmmaker since the early 1960s. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Women Choose Women (Guggenheim New York, 1965), Works on Paper (Brooklyn Museum, 1975), and BLAM! (Whitney Museum, 1984), as well as in shows at SOHO20, a Chelsea gallery for women artists. She has been invited as artist-in-residence at Wilson College, the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Cincinnati, and the California Institute of the Arts, and was a member of Fight Censorship, Women/Artist/Filmmakers, and the Women’s Caucus for Art. She currently lives in Sweden.
