While You Were Texting Exhibition and Panel Discussion

Earth Day and May Day are honored in the exhibition While You Were Texting, which confronts the reality that constant communication distracts us from working towards solutions to the problems that matter the most. It showcases the work of Daria Dorosh, Jose Marinez and Gayil Nalls, and features a public discussion organized by the artists. Additional programing includes two days of short film screenings, a creative hands-on workshop and a movie night.

In the exhibition Daria Dorosh uses digital print installations to question the impact of the commodification of beauty on the environment and human consciousness. Jose Marinez’s installations explore the designated role of technology in the 21st century, and which current resources are best suited to the contemporary issues humanity faces. Gayil Nalls’ work thrusts visitors into the natural world forced to consciousness through technology, merging the senses in pattern, light, color, sound and smell, to hypnotic effect.

EARTH and LABOR ROUNDTABLE | Sunday, May 1st, 5–7pm

Situated in the middle of the art installations, is the discussion forum, an area where short talks and lots of discussion will take place on the interlocking topics of planet welfare and the evolution of labor. The forum will be preceded by a reception from 4 – 5PM. Among the speakers are Carlos Pérez García-Pando, climate scientist at NASA Goddard Institute; Rachel Sussman, a photographer who explores the concept of survival and deep time; Amelia Marzec, and artist focused on enabling activist communities through technology; and Dove Rain “Gender Capitalist,” androgynous model, actor working as both male and female roles.

EXCEPTIONAL VOICES: INTERVIEW SERIES | Friday April 29th 5–10pm, Sunday May 1st 2–4pm

Gayil Nalls’ short films include John Bachcall, Hopi Elders and David Edwards.

CLOTHING DECONSTRUCTION/ REINVENTION OF THE SELF | Saturday April 30th from 4–6pm. Daria Dorosh leads a hands-on workshop.

MOVIE NIGHT | Saturday April 30th at 7pm

Jose Marinez hosts the screening and discussion.

The exhibition is free to the public. El Barrio is located in East Harlem at 213 E. 99th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.
