The Politics of Affordable Housing

The high cost of housing is one of the greatest challenges facing New York and other large U.S. cities today. To coincide with publication of their new collection, “Affordable Housing in New York: The People, Places, and Policies That Transformed a City,” and an exhibition of the same name at Hunter East Harlem Gallery (February 10–May 15, 2016), co-editors Nicholas Dagen Bloom and Matthew Gordon Lasner (Urban Affairs and Planning) bring together a panel of leaders to discuss New York’s rich legacy of affordable housing and what lessons from the past can be applied today in New York and nationally.

Panelists include Judi Kende, vice president and New York market leader for Enterprise Community Partners; Helen Rosenthal, New York City Council Member representing District 6 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side; and Alex F. Schwartz, Professor at Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy at the New School, and Director of the Milano School’s Urban Policy Lab.
