Tom McCarthy on Kathy Acker

This is an exclusive opportunity to hear Man Booker Prize finalist Tom McCarthy (Satin Island, C, Remainder) present his essay-length piece on the experimental novelist, punk poet, postmodernist, and feminist Kathy Acker (Blood and Guts in High School). Following his reading of ‘Kathy Acker’s Infidel Heteroglossia,’ McCarthy will be interviewed by Lynne Tillman (What Would Lynne Tillman Do, The Complete Madame Realism and Other Stories, No Lease on Life.)

Tom McCarthy is an English novelist, critic, and artist. He is known in the art world for the reports, manifestos and media interventions he has made as general secretary of the International Necronautical Society (INS), a semi-fictitious avant-garde network co-founded with Simon Critchley. His previous books include Men in Space, C, Remainder and Tintin and the Secret of Literature. In 2013 he was awarded an inaugural Windham-Campbell Literature Prize from Yale University. His novel Satin Island was short-listed for the 2015 Man Booker Prize, the 2015 Goldsmiths Prize, and was a New York Magazine Best Book of the Year.Typewriters, Bombs, Jellyfish: Essays is his latest book.

Lynne Tillman is the author of five novels, four collections of short stories, two collections of essays, and two other nonfiction books. She collaborates often with artists and writes regularly on culture, and her fiction is anthologized widely. Her novel No Lease on Life and her second essay collection What Would Lynne Tillman Do? were nominated, respectively, for a National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction (1998) and in Criticism (2014). She is Professor and Writer-in-Residence in the Department of English at the University at Albany, a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship as well as an Arts Writers grant from the Warhol Foundation/Creative Capital (2015). Her most recent book is The Complete Madame Realism and Other Stories (2016).

Kathy Acker was an American experimental novelist, punk poet, playwright, essayist, postmodernist and sex-positive feminist writer. She was strongly influenced by the Black Mountain School, William S. Burroughs, David Antin, French critical theory, philosophy and pornography. Her published works include Politics (1972), Great Expectations (1983), Blood and Guts in High School (1984), and Empire of the Senseless (1988).
