U.S.-Cuban Collaboration on the Restoration of Hemingway’s Finca Vigia

William Dupont will discuss the ongoing restoration of Ernest Hemingway’s home in Cuba based on his experience as the leader of a U.S. team of experts assisting Cuban preservation efforts at Finca Vigía. Hemingway was two months shy of his 40th birthday in May of 1939 when he moved into Finca Vigía, and it was his primary home for the final 22 years of his life. When he departed Cuba in July of 1960 to finish some magazine articles in Spain, he intended to return. Instead, he ended his own life by suicide in 1961. Left behind are the home and landscape he inhabited plus all the tangible remains of his life – books, letters, a record player, hunting trophies, fishing rods, liquor bottles, stacks of magazines on the floor, and his black Royal typewriter – all arranged as they were when he shut the door in 1960. More important is what can be felt, the intangible spirit of the author’s life and work.
