Vistas and Dreams: Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the Museum of the American Indian

This special symposium marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the NMAI’s predecessor institution—the Museum of the American Indian (MAI)—by George Gustav Heye (1874–1957). Distinguished scholars will delve into the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century contexts of North American museums, philanthropy, personal and scientific collecting, and perceptions of Native people. The symposium will explore how these circumstances set the stage for George Heye’s personal collecting after 1897 and his establishment of a museum dedicated to Native peoples of the Americas in New York City in 1916. A reception with refreshments follows the event. Full details can be found in the Program Guide. RSVP Strongly Encouraged: 212-514-3750 or [email protected]
