The Women of Othello: Speaking Truth to Power

A continuation of New York Theatre Workshop’s popular AfterWords discussion series, and the Shakespeare Society’s exclusive Shakespeare Talks series, we are proud to present this one-night-only discussion.

The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice is a play whose inherent complexity, along with its controversial stage history, has made it one of the most difficult of Shakespeare’s plays to talk about. Author of Passing Strange: Shakespeare, Race, and Contemporary America, Ayanna Thompson, will give it a try. Join us for a discussion about how this tragedy of sex, jealousy, race, honor, and deception resonates across centuries. With a special focus on the fearless truth-telling women of the play and their central role in its underlying “comic” structures, the conversation features Rachel Brosnahan (Desdemona), Marsha Stephanie Blake (Emilia), and Nikki Massoud (Bianca) from New York Theatre Workshop’s fall production of Othello, directed by Sam Gold and also starring David Oyelowo and Daniel Craig.
