Memorial Days: Biographies, Memoirs and Other Backward-Glancing Talks

Memorial Day is traditionally a time to honor the brave men and women who have died in military service. But the official holiday, which began in the 1860s, may well have originated in “decoration day” customs: families gathering in graveyards, holding celebratory, clan-wide reunions to remember their relatives and friends.
