13/13 Seminar Series 6/13 | ABOLISH CAPITAL

A joint session with the Institute for Social Research at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt.

The seminar will open with a performance by Heartbeat Opera of excerpts from the visual album Breathing Free and presentations by Director Ethan Heard and Creative Producer Ras Dia.

Professors Martin Saar and Bernard E. Harcourt will discuss Friedrich Pollock’s “State Capitalism: Its Possibilities and Limitations,” Franz Neumann’s Behemoth: The Structure and Practice of National Socialism, 1933–1944, Theodor W. Adorno’s “Late Capitalism or Industrial Society?,” and Herbert Marcuse’s One Dimensional Man.

This seminar will also be live streamed on YouTube and the Abolition Democracy 6/13 page.

This session will explore the regime of capital that displaced feudal property relations, and imagine its overcoming. We will focus on the debate within the Frankfurt School over the transformations of capitalism during the mid-20th century into state capitalism, totalitarian monopoly capitalism, or late capitalism. In the process, we will discuss the abolition of feudal property relations and paradigm shifts in political economy. We will also discuss arguments for cooperation as an alternative to capital.
