New Country Day Camp strives to create a camp that is inclusive, welcoming, and joyful for all children interested in attending camp throughout summer.

NCDC is excited to announce brand new programs for this summer that campers and parents will be sure to enjoy and appreciate. All-time favorites like Imagination, News and Film, and Earth Science are returning and we’re introducing some new options based on parent surveys and camp trends. The 12 specialized units are run by creative, passionate, and experienced teaching artists and educators who build curricula rooted in nature and guided by Jewish values.

In response to overwhelming requests from families, we are delighted to announce that we are offering increasingly flexible registration options this summer! This year we are allowing families to sign up for any weeks of camp that they want, at a two-week minimum and so long as the first two weeks are consecutive. You can check out our 2019 dates and rates here. (link to: https://www.14streety.org/camps/newcountrydaycamp/dates-rates/

For summer 2019, New Country Day Camp is working to enhance the structure of each day in order to further create an intentional, thoughtful, and flexible experience for all campers based on developmental level and interests. Ages groups have been recalculated and renamed:

Tumbleroot for campers entering K and 1st grade in fall 2019,

Featherstone for campers entering 2nd and 3rd grade in fall 2019,

Thundercreek for campers entering 4th and 5th grade in fall 2019, and

Aspenfire for campers entering 6th through 8th grade in fall 2019.

As campers get older at NCDC, they have increased opportunities to choose how they spend their time in unit programming. The new programs include: Build, Music, and Sustainable Cooking & Gardening. Build is a new program in which campers will develop design and construction skills for hand-tool woodworking and architecture, and learn all about workshop safety. Music is a new program in which campers will learn and practice guitar and singing. These mini musicians will have opportunities to help lead camp singing activities with small and large groups. And finally, new this summer, Sustainable Cooking & Gardening. In our new farm-to-table culinary skills program, campers will learn open-air cooking techniques including kitchen safety using ingredients they grow and harvest themselves in the NCDC garden on the campgrounds!

Campers in Tumbleroot are provided the option to taste each program unit once a week during afternoon choice time programming. In the morning, they work with Tumbleroot program specialists who run early childhood friendly activities.

Campers in Featherstone have the ability to select the unit they would like to focus on each week, and also rotate through each program during daily scheduled activities with their Featherstone groups so they can get a taste of everything that NCDC has to offer- including the programs they didn’t know they would love!

In addition to signing up for their weekly elective unit, Thundercreek campers have the added privilege of choosing a 30-minute daily unit activity in order to participate in multiple programs they are passionate about.

In order to implement these incredible changes, more highly-qualified support staff with Masters in Social Work will join the team.

New Country Day Camp is also known for is its Leaders in Training program (LIT). NCDC’s Leaders in Training program will now serve 6th graders in addition to 7th and 8th graders. The LIT program will be part of the new Aspenfire division. This program is geared toward campers who are ready to take the next steps in their camper experience, become leaders in the community, and begin to transition to eventually working at camp. This program focuses on participants learning the values of responsibility, growing into the type of person they want to be, and discovering how they want to help the world around them. Throughout this three-year program, Aspenfire LITs participate in different tracks depending on their grade, including acting as buddies to our youngest campers, planning Maccabi (our multi-day camp-wide competition), creating sustainability and beautification projects camp, and volunteering in the local Staten Island community. Once a week, Aspenfire LIT’s will also take trips outside of camp. Last year, the group kayaked around Staten Island, visited an adventure course with ziplines and other ropes courses, and participated in multi-day trips to two sleepaway camps, among many other awesome adventures.

About New Country Day Camp

New Country Day Camp, a program of the 14th Street Y and Educational Alliance, is a joyful and inclusive community where campers, families, and staff build meaningful connections and experience personal growth through high-quality programs that are rooted in nature and guided by Jewish values.

Transportation on air-conditioned buses from convenient locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn is provided to the 75-acre Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds in the forest of the Staten Island Greenbelt, where swimming pools, hiking trails, and open meadows set the scene for a summer of adventure and enrichment for campers from kindergarten through 8th grade.

The professional staff empowers campers to be themselves in a supportive, nurturing environment. With innovative, kid-charged activities from nature and science, to the arts and athletics, in addition to two daily periods of instructional and free swim, there’s something for everyone at NCDC.

A non-religious program, NCDC kids jump into new ideas and universal concepts through cultural Jewish values. We welcome campers of all backgrounds; your kids don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy the 14th Street Y’s New Country Day Camp. Inclusion of all types of families and children, including those with developmental differences and special needs, is a priority at NCDC.
