Identifying the precise color of a given stamp has long been a challenge for philatelists affecting both the value and historical context of certain stamps. Since the printing of the first stamp, the penny black, being able to identify the exact color or shade of a stamp has been an issue. Digitization and scanning advances have eliminated the need for naming conventions and given philatelists a tool to make accurate comparisons to a reference. Stan Brown has developed an app for scanners he calls “Stamp” that will work on most operating systems. It’s intended to take advantage of a common accessory used with many home computers.
