A Look at Rescue Company 2

Please join us for a discussion of Studio Gang’s Rescue Company 2, presented in conjunction with Mapping Community: Public Investment in NYC. The conversation will be between Weston Walker, AIA, of Studio Gang, and Michaela Metcalfe of the NYC Department of Design and Construction, moderated by Mapping Community curator Faith Rose, AIA.

The program will explore the process and challenges behind Rescue Company 2. Rescue Company 2 faced two potentially dissonant goals—state of the art training for an elite group of firefighters and a heightened level of engagement with the local community. The program will explore that tension and discuss how it was ultimately resolved.

Speakers:
Weston Walker, AIA, Design Principal, Studio Gang
Michaela Metcalfe, Director of Design and Construction Excellence, NYC Department of Design and Construction

Moderator:
Faith Rose, AIA, Partner, O’Neill Rose Architects; curator, Mapping Community

How do public buildings like schools, firehouses, and libraries end up in your community, and who had a say in how they got there?

Mapping Community demystifies the complex process of capital planning in New York City by explaining the rules that govern the capital process for our city, the various city agencies that implement projects, and the ways everyday New Yorkers have a say in what types of investment they would like to see in their neighborhoods.

The exhibition will also look at how public projects are accomplished at the local community level by illustrating five types of public infrastructure—housing, transit, parks, schools, and libraries—in five community boards.
