Aaron Copland & the Jazz Age

Composer, lyricist, author, performer and teacher Louis Rosen leads special 2-hour lectures focused this season on the oeuvre of the “Dean of American composers,” Aaron Copland.

Returning to the USA from Paris, Aaron Copland was intent on creating a distinctly American style of concert music. His unique approach fused Stravinsky-influenced Neoclassicism with the melodic, rhythmic and instrumental colors of jazz. The first fruit of this fusion is his masterpiece, Music for the Theater (1925), followed by the wild Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Most listeners today don’t associate Copland with the Jazz Age, but taken together, the orchestral jazz-influenced works of Gershwin and Copland from the 1920s create the first recognizably urban-American orchestral sound.
