Adult Education: The Exiles Return

Join us on Zoom for a new class with Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Regina Stein!

The Jewish people who returned to the land of Israel in the sixth century BCE from exile in Babylonia faced serious political, religious, economic, and social challenges. How did they go about reestablishing a sense of community? Were they restorers or innovators? What were their successes and failures?

We will read excerpts from the late-Biblical books of Ezra and Nehemiah as we explore the experiences of these former exiles, and confront deep questions on the meaning of home and the complexities surrounding the act of coming home.

No previous Biblical knowledge or Hebrew language is required. Texts will be provided in both Hebrew and English.

Three Zoom Sessions: Tuesdays 11:00am-12:00pm

September 6, 13, 20

Dr. Regina Stein is the Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge Street. She has taught for Temple Emanu-El’s Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning, the Wexner Heritage Foundation, CLAL, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel, the Academy for Jewish Religion, and the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem.
