Agnès Varda: Visual Artist

Known for igniting the French New Wave movement with her 1954 feature La pointe courte, visionary filmmaker Agnès Varda has been innovative since the very beginning of her prolific career. Over the past 50 years, Varda has created a remarkable body of work united by the concept of the “film essay” which she pioneered with her friends Alain Resnais and Chris Marker. Using her personal history, relationships, and travels as inspiration, Varda makes thought-provoking films that playfully dance between traditional categories of fiction and nonfiction, poem and prose, cinema and photography.

In recent years, Varda has extended her extraordinary practice to include visual art, creating multimedia works with photography, film, and media installation. Join Varda for a rare talk about her work as a visual artist to celebrate her very first New York exhibition, opening Mar 2 at Blum & Poe.
