Alice Coltrane Tribute Featuring Brooklyn Raga Massive

Turiya Alice Coltrane was the embodiment of jazz and spirituality. An esteemed jazz composer, harpist, and pianist, she married John Coltrane in the 1960s, and her devotion and interest in Eastern modalities influenced his seminal work, A Love Supreme. Her own catalog of recordings, including Journey in Satchidananda, Universal Consciousness, and Translinear Light, continue to inspire a new generation of musicians and seekers. In 2017 David Byrne’s record label Luaka Bop released a compilation of devotional music she recorded at the Shanti Anantam Ashram in California, which she founded in 1975, with music as the foundation of her spiritual practice.

In this tribute to Turiya, Brooklyn Raga Massive has put together an elite super-group of jazz and Indian classical musicians, all of whom have performed with musicians who worked with Alice Coltrane. The harpist Brandee Younger, a true inheritor of Turiya’s legacy, is joined by the outstanding pianist Marc Cary and bassist Dezron Douglas. These incredible musicians, who are all making waves on the progressive jazz scene, join forces with the adventurous Indian classical exponents Jay Gandhi on bansuri, Sameer Gupta on tabla/drumset, and Mari Tanaka on tanpura.

Brandee Younger: Harp
Marc Cary: Piano
Jay Gandhi: Bansuri
Dezron Douglas: Bass
Sameer Gupta: Tabla/Drumset
Mari Tanaka: Tanpura
