America 101 Project: A Discussion on Guns and America

Nitehawk is happy to host The America 101 Project for a discussion on Sunday, December 10th. All are welcome. No tickets required.

The topic for the December meeting will focus on the US and our relationship with guns and the 2nd Amendment. We have our fabulous story-teller, Nikki Vega, a local LGBT comedian, actor, and co-host of Am I Write Ladies? and scholar Adam Skaggs, Chief Counsel from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

What’s it about, America? Freedom or fear? In this loaded conversation, we explore our country’s unhealthy relationship with gun-ownership. 1791’s Second Amendment to the Constitution has been widely debated since its creation: what is “the right to keep and bear arms”, for whom was it originally intended, and what led to its inclusion in the Bill of Rights in the first place? We will also take a hard look at the National Rifle Association (NRA), which claims to be the oldest operating civil rights organization in the U.S.A. It was founded in 1871 as a marksmanship training program for hunters and sportsmen; how did it become the wildly divisive and politically powerful organization we’re familiar with today? In this expansive talk, we hope to come away with a greater understanding of one of the largest chasms in our culture.

About THE AMERICA 101 PROJECT: Eh-den Perlove and Lily Claire Nussbaum met as volunteers for the Women’s March on Washington NYC Chapter. Alongside twenty other women they coordinated fundraisers, ran community-building events, and ultimately brought thousands of New Yorkers to Washington, D.C. for the March. In the months that followed, the two women brainstormed about the necessity of maintaining momentum within this new wave of activists. As both come from creative performance backgrounds, they understand the value of storytelling, communication, and truth above all. With the guiding belief that context and facts are fundamental to active resistance, they decided to create an accessible series of discussions and panels that explore the history and present state of our nation. In their spare time, Eh-den works for the Brooklyn Arts Council and is finishing her Masters degree in Business and Nonprofit Management, and Lily is getting her Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling, writing music, and volunteering as a crisis counselor for the Crisis Text Line.
