Joe Rao and Ted Williams highlight the spectacular sights of the summer sky. This July, Mars comes within 35.7 million miles of Earth—its closest approach since 2003—producing a fiery glow. The Perseids reach their peak on August 12, producing a meteor shower during a new Moon, making it a great year to observe this famous phenomenon.
