Art and LGBTQ Activism: Music with a Social Conscience

The New York Philharmonic and The Center co-present an exploration of LGBTQ issues and art as activism in classical music. Composer John Corigliano, whose Symphony No. 1 was written in response to the AIDS crisis, will be joined by Philharmonic President and CEO Deborah Borda to discuss how the cultural landscape has evolved over recent decades. The discussion, moderated by The Center’s founding archivist, longtime activist and former New York Philharmonic Associate Archivist Rich Wandel, will be preceded by a performance.

This event is part of Music of Conscience, the New York Philharmonic and Music Director Jaap van Zweden’s three-week exploration of how composers have responded to the social and political issues of their time (May 22–June 8). Learn more at nyphil.org/conscience.
