Art Set in Stone: Lithography in Paris, 1815-1900

The great French color posters of the 1890s by artists including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Pierre Bonnard represent a culmination of lithography’s rapid artistic and technical development since its establishment as a printmaking medium in Paris around 1815.

Over the course of the 19th century, lithography became a vehicle for new subjects and experimental techniques by artists who embraced the novelty and accessibility of the new medium. This talk will explore the innovative approaches to lithography by well-known painters including Théodore Géricault and Edouard Manet, as well as less-familiar artists such as Nicolas Charlet and Charles Dulac.
