Artist Talk: The Cockettes’ Fayette Hauser

Join associate curator Barbara Paris Gifford for a lively conversation with Fayette Hauser, costume designer, author, and co-founder of The Cockettes, San Francisco’s legendary avant-garde theater troupe. The pair will discuss the exuberent influence of The Cockettes on American Underground culture in the late 60s and 70s—from glam rock to drag culture and more—while they take a deep dive into stunning images of The Cockettes in their revolutionary prime.

Fayette Hauser co-founded The Cockettes in 1969 in San Francisco. She is a graduate of Boston University, College of Fine Arts with a BFA in painting and sculpture. Her photography has been widely exhibited, and was included in the De Young Museum’s Summer of Love exhibition. She has been featured in numerous documentaries, and her writing has been published in magazines around the world. Her book, The Cockettes: Acid Drag & Sexual Anarchy, 1969-1972, was released this year.
