Asia Briefing: Has India’s Time Come?

While China’s meteoric rise often dominates conversations about Asia’s emerging global powers, India’s explosive economic growth has vaulted it into the ranks of the world’s fastest-growing nations. India has the world’s third largest military and is taking on a more prominent role on regional and global issues. Today, India’s leaders increasingly expect to see their country treated accordingly. 2018 marks a crucial year for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of 2019 elections, as his government presses a reform program and further enhances its engagement across the Indo-Pacific.

Join us for a look at the year ahead for India and how its trajectory and policies will impact the U.S., Asia, and the world. The discussion will feature Alyssa Ayres, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia and author of the forthcoming book Our Time Has Come: How India is Making Its Place in the World, and Bobby Ghosh, former Editor-in-Chief of the Hindustan Times.

Alyssa Ayres is Senior Fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations. She served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia from 2010 to 2013. She was the founding director of the India and South Asia practice at McLarty Associates.
