A classic of Japanese literature from the Heian period (794-1185) often called the world's first modern novel, The Tale of Genjihas inspired Japanese artists for centuries. Likewise, Tales of Ise, a collection of tanka poems and associated narratives, also dating from the Heian period, is a rich source of inspiration for Japanese artists including Sakai Hōitsu. Sip sake and enjoy light Japanese snacks while gaining insights into these masterpieces of Japanese literature under the guidance of Haruo Shirane, Shincho Professor of Japanese Literature, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University. In advance of the meeting, engage in a close reading of translations of selections from The Tale of Genji and Tales of Ise and come prepared to share your observations.
