Awakening From the Daydream – Understanding Karma (How Did I Get Into This Mess?)

According to the shockingly up-to-date Buddhist painting The Wheel of Life, we are trapped in a daydream world—a Walter Mitty-like projected reality of six different realms, which we cycle through repeatedly, based on our current habits and personal history. This painting, a kind of ancient PowerPoint presentation, describes the process of karma and these six realms: gods (fixation on pleasure), jealous gods (jealousy and competition), humans (hope and fear), animals (thick habits), hungry ghosts (addiction), and hell (rage and depression). But meditation practice can awaken us from our daydream, and liberate us from the six realms.

This talk, based on David Nichtern’s recent book Awakening From The Daydream: Reimagining the Buddha’s Wheel of Life, will include meditation instruction, practice, and juicy discussion.
