Baumel & Boquiren: A Book Launch & Concert

Book Launch and Concert. Join us for a presentation of Judith Baumel’s new book of poems Passeggiate and the world-premiere of “Tre Passeggiate,” Sidney Boquiren’s musical setting of Baumel’s poetry, performed by NYC soprano Amber Evans and pianist Jeremy Chan. Free and open to the public thanks to the support of Adelphi University’s College of Arts and Sciences.

In Passeggiate, the newest collection of poems from Walt Whitman Award-winning author Judith Baumel, characters from classical pastoral poems find a new voice as contemporary Sicilians and Bronxites.

These twenty poems place Virgil’s Tityrus and Meliboeus discussing 9/11 alongside Antigenes feeding grapes to Corydon as “fat as Elizabeth Taylor’s Jewels.” Baumel’s On the Death of Boys envisions the Three Fates as maternal figures grieving for the abbreviated lives of New York City’s youth.

The collection maps personal memories across the history-laden landscapes of Siracusa, Palermo, and Enna. Casually erudite and recklessly passionate, Passeggiate brings past and present into close conversation, illuminating both.

Event is Free. Registration is Requested for Planning Purposes.
