Bernstein — The 1940’s: Beginnings — Two Ballets: Fancy Free and Facsimile

Leonard Bernstein was the face of American music around the globe during the second half of the 20th Century.

92nd Street Y is proud to celebrate Bernstein’s 100th Birthday with a year-long, twelve-lecture series exploring his extraordinary legacy as a composer of theater and concert music, conductor and teacher. We begin with his first two ballets, both collaborations with the brilliant choreographer Jerome Robbins: Fancy Free, which marked the sudden, unexpected arrival of two major new talents on the New York theatrical scene; and Facsimile, an intimate psychologically probing work which offers one of Bernstein’s most beautiful and underappreciated symphonic scores. Welcome to Bernstein’s 100th Birthday Celebration.
