Albrecht Dürer and his contemporaries have long been regarded as the epitome of German art, but rich artistic traditions also existed in Central Europe during the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Drawings by artists from this period were purchased by early American collectors, and interest has increased in the last few decades. Examine this history and consider how it relates to the continuing reevaluation of art from Central Europe. Part of Sunday at the Met—Dürer and Beyond: Central European Drawings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1400–1700.
