Beyond the Kremlin: The Pro-Democracy Movement and What the Russian People are Really Thinking

Join us as David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker and Vladimir Kara-Murza, leading pro-democracy campaigner, consider the prospects for democracy in Russia. Nina Khrushcheva, Professor of International Affairs at The New School, will provide the opening remarks and introduction.
Kara-Murza, chairman of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, vice chairman of Open Russia, prominent political activist and winner of the 2018 Civil Courage Prize, will address the truth behind the persistent stereotypes that have governed Western understanding of Russia and Western approaches toward it. Would the Russian people thrive outside of an authoritarian, strong-handed government? What is actually happening on the ground in Russia’s political scene? How would the country vote in a fair and free election? What is the view of young people? And what do civic institutions need to support change?
