The Body: Fashion and Physique

Museum at FIT associate curator Emma McClendon will discuss her most recent exhibition, The Body: Fashion and Physique, which examines the complex history of the “ideal” body in fashion, considering the relationship between the fashion industry and body politics from the 19th century to today.

Fashion is inextricably linked to the physical form of the wearer. Elaborate undergarments, diet regimens, exercise routines and even plastic surgery have all been promoted as tools for attaining the ideal fashion figure. However, the idealized fashionable body is a cultural construct — it has shifted and changed throughout history to emphasize different shapes and proportions.
