Book release event with Ngugi wa Thiong’o: “Wrestling with the Devil”

Book release event with Ngugi wa Thiong’o:
“Wrestling with the Devil,” a prison memoir
A reading and talk, followed by a conversation with RB spokesperson Andy Zee.

“Wrestling with the Devil” is an unforgettable chronicle of the year that the world-renowned Kenyan novelist, social-cultural theorist, and radical voice of conscience was thrown in a Kenyan jail without charge.

Written in the early 1980s and never before published in America, “Wrestling with the Devil” is Ngugi’s account of the drama and challenges of writing fiction under 24-hour surveillance. He captures the spirit of defiance that defines hope and the power of imagination under extreme conditions of confinement.

New hardback edition published by The New Press, February 2018.

“One of the greatest writers of our time.” – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Ngugi wa Thiong’o was born in Limuru, Kenya, in 1938. He wrote the first modern novel in the Gikuyu language, Petals of Blood, on toilet-paper while in prison. He is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine.
