Beverly Falk is Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Early Childhood Education at The School of Education, The City College of New York/CUNY. She has been a classroom teacher, school founder and director, district administrator, researcher, and consultant at the school, district, state, and national level, as well as a Fellow of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the CCNY Colin Powell Center on Public Policy. Dr. Falk's work focuses on supporting teachers to create learning environments that foster active engagement, are responsive to diverse cultures and languages, involve families in children's learning, and develop not only cognitive skills but also other important human attributes such as curiosity, perseverance, empathy, flexibility, resilience, and social awareness. She is particularly interested in ensuring that our youngest, most vulnerable citizens in historically under-served diverse urban communities have equitable access to such high quality learning opportunities. Other strands of her work include teacher research and performance-based assessment - garnering the knowledge teachers generate in their practice to inform instruction, support students' learning, and advance the knowledge of the field. She is the founding editor of The New Educator, a quarterly journal about educator preparation and the author/co-author/editor of over 100 publications. Her most recent books are Defending Childhood: Keeping the Promise of Early Education (Teachers College Press, 2012); Teaching Matters: Stories from Inside City Schools, co-authored with Megan Blumenreich (The New Press, 2012); and Teaching the Way Children Learn (Teachers College Press, 2008).
