Brains in Sync: The Neuroscience of Music, Drugs, and Shared Experience
When: Wed, Aug 19 at 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Where: Sugar Mouse NYC
Price: Free
This is not a dry academic talk. Expect storytelling, humor, surprising insights, and plenty of “wait… that’s actually true” moments.
When a room full of strangers moves to the same beat, their brains start to move together too. This talk explores the neuroscience of interbrain synchrony, such as how music, rhythm, and altered states pull separate nervous systems into a shared rhythm, from ritual dance to the modern rave. We'll trace the math underneath the music (fractal structure, wave dynamics) up through the psychology of the dance floor, and into the clinic, where music is increasingly used as a deliberate tool in psychedelic-assisted therapy. Drawing on years inside the cannabis industry and hands-on psychedelic pharmacology research, this talk breaks down what's actually happening in the brain on psychoactive substances: shifts in perception, cognition, and the neurochemistry behind altered states, plus what's driving their growing clinical use in therapy.
