Bronxites Invited to Learn How to Humanely Manage Feral Cat Colonies

New Yorkers can gain the knowledge and skills needed to help the feral and stray community cats in their area at a free Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) certification workshop hosted by Bideawee, one of the country’s oldest and most respected animal welfare and pet adoption organizations.

The TNR certification workshop is part Bideawee’s NYC Feral Cat Initiative (FCI). FCI supports the efforts of organizations and individuals who help stray and feral cats — collectively known as “community cats” — and perform TNR in New York City in an effort to humanely reduce the population of community cats.

Learn the basics of TNR and colony care in this hands-on workshop designed by the NYC Feral Cat Initiative of Bideawee and Alley Cat Allies. In this workshop, you will:

• Learn about feral cats, their history and behavior
• Learn the steps of humane trapping and pre- and post-spay/neuter surgery care with the help of video and live demonstrations
• Learn the basics of caring for a cat colony
• Learn how to build good relationships with neighbors throughout the TNR process and how to help the cats be good neighbors

Attendees will become Certified TNR Caretakers in NYC and receive a packet of reference guides covering all aspects of TNR and colony management.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be eligible for free spay/neuter, trap loans, transport of cats and traps, specialty training workshops, community outreach materials, TNR Caretaker Update newsletter, networking opportunities, dedicated NYCFCI help desk, and other services and support within the five boroughs of New York City provided by the NYC Feral Cat Initiative of Bideawee, the ASPCA, and other area organizations.

Note: This workshop is open to people who are 18 or older. Please do not bring animals to the workshop (with the exception of service animals).
