Building an International Rule of Law

NY LAWSince its founding, the United Nations has been building an international rule of law in a world where fast changing developments can affect the security and interests of the community of nations. In his lecture at New York Law School, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel Miguel de Serpa Soares will elaborate on the implementation of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s ideas on the rule of law.  The Secretary-General spoke about the rule of law, and how it is at the very heart of the United Nations’ mission, at New York Law School in 2011.

Miguel de Serpa Soares is the Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel. He oversees the Office of Legal Affairs which provides a unified central legal service for the United Nations. His extensive experience in legal and international affairs includes serving as Director General of the Department of Legal Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, and representing his country in various bilateral and multilateral international forums, including the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the Committee of Public Law Legal Advisers of the Council of Europe, and the International Criminal Court’s Assembly of States Parties.
