Butoh: Into the Depth Summer Course with Vangeline

When: Wed, Jul 8 at 6:00pm - Fri, Jul 31 9:00pm
Where: 126 10th Street, Suite 207, Brooklyn, NY 11215
Price: Starting at $150
Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute offers a five-week immersive course in Butoh — the avant-garde Japanese dance form that emerged in the 1950s and resists easy definition, characterized by meditative movement drawn from sensation, emotion, surrealist technique, and above all, authenticity. Sessions include space for conversation after each class, culminating in a student performance on July 31.
The course is led by Vangeline, artistic director of Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute and one of the foremost authorities on Butoh in the world. She has taught at Princeton, Cornell, NYU, and Duke, and is the recipient of a 2026 National Endowment for the Arts Dance Award. Her work has been praised by the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, and she has been commissioned by Esperanza Spalding, Skrillex, and David J. of Bauhaus. Open to dancers and non-dancers alike.
Wednesdays, July 8, 15, 22, and 29, 6–9 p.m. | Performance: Friday, July 31 | 126 10th Street, Suite 207, Brooklyn
Sliding scale $150–$500 | Limited to 20 students | Register by June 25: [email protected]
