Bx Hike Series Part 1: From Mott Haven to the Grand Concourse

In 1886 the Suburban Rapid Transit Company extended service of the Third Avenue El into the “Annexed District,” as The Bronx was then known. Shortly thereafter, the communities of Mott Haven, Melrose, and Morrisania became the nineteenth-century equivalent of Boom-town Suburbia as people fled the overcrowded tenement districts of Manhattan Island to the relatively spacious homes of the Mainland. Join tour guide Nestor Danyluk on this dynamic tour that will pass the legacies of this era: from stately churches, row houses, and transportation hubs of the late 1800s to the Art Deco landmarks of the 1930s.

Meet at the northeast corner of East 138th Street and Alexander Avenue in front of Dunkin’ Donuts. Take the #6 train to the Third Avenue station and exit via the Alexander Avenue stairways. The 3.5 mile walk will end at the 161 Street station of the #4 and D train.

Tours are $10 per member and $20 per non-member. Call 718-881-8900 to reserve your spot!
