Byzantium and Islam: Age of Transition

The Eastern Mediterranean, from Syria to North Africa, begins the seventh century as part of the Byzantine Empire and ends as part of the Islamic world. Helen Evans will discuss this exhibition, the first to display the exceptional art and culture of the Byzantine state in the seventh century, the adaptation of its arts to reflect the taste of the territories’ new Islamic rulers, and the beginning of Islamic traditions that evolved from the process.
