Can Art Change the World?

For many writers, visual artists, filmmakers, and performers, making art is a form of imagining new ways of living and of suggesting a fresh view of the world. What sorts of political and social change can art bring about? Should we expect it to have an effect on how a society apportions power or runs its institutions? What political responsibilities do these institutions, of art or higher learning, have? In this panel moderated by Ian Buruma, Mary Schmidt Campbell, Julian Lucas, and Phillip Lopate discuss the extent to which art can shape or change our views of the world in which we find ourselves.
